The Doran Refuge

A cocoon in the heart of the Aravis, a real mountain refuge at less than 2 hours of Sallanches

Why coming in the Doran refuge ? Because in only 2h30 walk on the Gyapète single track (or 1h30 on the 4x4 path), you'll leave the city center of Sallanches to experience the alpine environment, at the bottom of the Pointe Percée, "our little Matterhorn", at 1495m high.

Because you'll find a wonderful culinary experience : we only serve local products. You'll taste the traditional meal of the region, the "farcement" served with a nettle soup. You'll find also some more common cuisine in Doran, meals for each member of the family.

Because it's the perfect place for a first night in a refuge. In the morning or the day before, why not going for a little hike on one of the numerous paths around the refuge? If you pass by the farm next to our place, why not buying some cheese to take away home?

Because you'll meet climbers back from the Tours d'Areu as well as big families looking for a nice experience in the Alps.

Last but not least, because it's a perfect step on your trek the Tour du pays Mont-Blanc.

The story of Doran

The construction of the refuge began in 1974. André Bottollier-Curtet, aka “Dédé” started the exploitation of the place. There was a pretty nice atmosphere up there. Then, in 1999, his nephew Laurent bought the place. The well-known cook worked hard to modernize the refuge : a few years later, the place became this nice alpine lodge, with dormitories carved in the wood.

Hikers and residents of the valley were seduced by this little cocoon at the bottom of the Aravis mountains. “We have a lot of people who come very often. It's not that common for a refuge at 1500m high. We try to preserve this typical charm”, explains Roselyne Jacquier, who succeeded at Laurent to keep the refuge in 2012. But Doran is not only a typical place it's also a really comfy lodge for a perfect night in the montain. A cocoon, as we said...

Doran area is well-known for his easy hikes for all the family, like the hike of the “4 Têtes” for example. A 3 hours walk uphill for a global really accessible walk (10 y/o and above) which fits perfectly in a single day up there. From the summit of the 4 Têtes, you'll enjoy a wonderful landscape on the Mont-Blanc and the Aravis. And for the toughest, they can join the Pointe Percée from the col of Doran (1h30 very technical walk).

Some other hikes ? Of course : you'll find a lot of options up there. Just call us for more informations or come and meet us.

Climbers ? The Tours d'Areu area offers some nice routes on a beautiful rock from 6b to 7c (just 1h walk from the refuge).
